Georgia’s famous quail hunting tradition is inextricably tied to its rich plantation history. The numerous cotton plantations established in the rich soil around Thomasville and Albany in the 1850s continued to operate as winter retreats for wealthy northerners after the agricultural collapse of the late 1870s.
The region became a sportsman’s winter paradise where quail were plentiful, hunting was challenging and southern hospitality made visiting a pleasure. Many newly affluent northerners bought large tracts of land at low prices and established plantations that became hunting paradises.
These winter retreats preserved large tracts of prime quail habitat for generations. The longleaf pine-wiregrass ecosystem the bobwhite calls home has disappeared and become fragmented throughout much of the majestic gamebird’s range. But, the plantations harbor some of the last remaining stands of longleaf pine in the Southeast.
Today, hunting plantations across Georgia preserve prime quail habitat and fine southern traditions. They are the legacy of the early shooting preserves and continue to allow sportsmen to appreciate world-class hunting and the rich culture of plantation life.
